Chalfont St Giles Infant School & Nursery Play Fort

Overview

GORILLA role summary:

We built a 75sqm fort for the children of Chalfont St Giles Infant School & Nursery, reusing timber and other materials from its 2019 season of events. The fort was designed to maximise the use of materials that Gorilla had already used and minimise any virgin material. The design needed to be open so that teachers could see a 30 strong class of small children at all times. We also had to accommodate a slope with a drop of approximately 3m over the length of the fort, so making it safe and complying with guidelines, an important consideration.

Timescales involved: 2 months.

  • design and selection of timber
  • plans and layout
  • 2-month build on the Shakman Field site
  • 600 hours of labour on-site

Result / Outcome:

Highly successful and well-used school fort.

Feedback:

Elen Peal Headteacher said, “The fort is an amazing addition to our out-door learning space. We are really fortunate to have someone so community-minded living and working in our village. Andy’s contribution will make a real difference to the children, the fort will be thoroughly enjoyed by all. Thank you so much to Gorilla UK.’
